Of the 197 woodcuts, seven are repeats and the last ten and their text were added by the translator, probably Jean Martin. The 5 x 5 cm. woodcuts have been attributed to Jean Cousin (probably the elder) and to Jean Goujon. Mortimer opines that at least two different artists were involved. The covers are panelled in gilt with the super-ex-libris of Victor Massena, Prince d'Essling, in their centers. The spine is panelled and tooled in gilt with the monogram "VM" in each compartment.
